Beanie Drive

On Friday I did the rounds and collected from all the ladies that are contributing to the
Beanie Drive.
The ladies at the Salvation Army have been fabulous and the Ryn Park ladies have just been so generous with their time.
So far our Beanie count stands at "140"
Some will be distributed at Marikana, some have gone to the Orphans Organization in Zimbabwe, some to St Peter's Methodist in Etwatwa, so we have 280 ears that we are warming thus far.
Thanks ladies - Keep it up.

Salvation Army Easter Eggs

On Tuesday we had another super day handing our Easter Eggs at the Salvation Army in Benoni.
The ladies that are resident at the Salvation Army home have also volunteered to help with the "Beanie Drive" so we have supplied them with wool and needles.
We made Thursday Cupcake day at the Home where we could just sit and chat while everyone got on with their knitting.
I have collected three beanies that were completed so far.
Well done ladies - keep up with the good work.
Total beanies are now close to 40.

Igugulethu Home of Safety

Sorting The Easter Eggs
The children of Tom Newby Primary School have collected
Dishing Them Out
The Babies
about 5,000 Easter Eggs so Dameon gathered up about 300 of them and decided to spoil the children of Igugulethu Home this afternoon.

The kids were very excited to see Dameon, Courtney and Victoria again and this time the

babies were awake so we could pop in and see them.

The Toddlers
I don't know who enjoys these outings more the kids of Igugulethu or our kids.

Well done Dameon - Keep up the good work.

Beanie Drive

Winter is slowly showing it's face, especially early in the morning and late evening so what better than to be blessed by a beanie.

Thank you Northfield for the donation of wool so far.

Thank you to all the ladies who have offered to knit for us.Especially our Senior Citizens have been getting their knitting needles out the cupboards. One lady in Ryn Park has not put a hand to knitting in 20 years and is thoroly enjoying it.

Should you be interested to join us, it is loads of fun, drop me a line.  I will supply the wool if you do not have.

If you are a group in the Boksburg/Benoni area I will even bring the muffins.

"Jubilee Home Fun Day"

Early Saturday morning everyone was off doing their bit for the Jubilee Home Fun Day.

First the Jumping Castle was set up then the rolls collected for the hot dogs and of course the long awaited Face Painting Station manned by the grand kids.

From the start we kids lining up for their Face Paint and keeping us busy on the Jumping Castles.

We had to keep an eye on them at the pool as well so there was no rest for the wicked.

Midday the munched on Hot dogs until not a crumb was left and we kept the cold drinks
flowing throughout the day.

Just after lunch a very special lady arrived from Heart Filled Parties with her sweet machines and set up her station with a real Christmas feel. Christmas decorations and balloons adorned their kiosk and they even wore their Father Christmas hats while they served the kids.

The kids could eat as much as they liked - Candy Floss - Pop Corn - Snow Cones. All going down very well with people that really understand children.

We have one more surprise for them and on Christmas Eve we will arrive with a Special gift pack for each of the children.

The draw for Nan's Quilt No 14 was done and a big thank you to Mr. Keith Faulke from the Wattlespring Gun Club that supported us. You are the owner of our quilt.

We would like to say some special thank yous to the people that made this day very special for the children of Jubilee Home.

First the the Basics Group: Our main sponsor for the day. Thank you very much, without you this day would not have been possible.

Vaugh Hatting

Wendy and Trevor from Heart Filled Parties.

All who bought tickets for our raffle

May you all be Blessed - Have a wonderful Christmas - and once again, Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Due to pending court cases that the children are involved in we have had to be very cautious with exposing the identities of the children but I sure hope you get the feel of the day from our pics, it was great fun for all.

John Wesley Community Centre Art Students

On Tuesday we were back at the John Westley Community Centre to visit the art students.

They do some incredible work.
Just after three o’clock the students started their class and we were introduced to them and some of their work.

They have paintings and drawings that are entered into different art competitions and at the moment one of the students has won a regional and provincial competition. Next step – the Nationals.

Last year they had a student that competed in the USA and with approximately 40,000 entries he finished in 24th place. Quite amazing.

We spoiled them with some munchies and drinks - and a promise to be back.

Well done guys – keep up the good work.

16 October 2013

Nan's Quilt No 14

It has been decided.

All funds raised with Nan's Quilt no 14 will be used for "Jubilee Home Fun Day"

Jubilee Home is place of safety for children from 1month – 13 years of age.

When the courts remove children from abused situations while the court cases are in process, they are placed in the safety of Jubilee Home.

They are well looked after and work with social workers and therapists during their stay at Jubilee Home.

Once the courts have come to a decision, the children are then returned to their parental homes or in foster care.

We think they would really enjoy a day of laughter with not a care in the world. Their only business that day is to have fun.

We will be setting up a Carnival atmosphere where they can have Hotdogs, Hamburgers, Pop Corn, Candy Floss, Games, Jumping Castles - you name it we are going to try and put it up for them.

Should you want to join us and extend a helping hand we would really appreciate.

We need donations and physical help to make "Jubilee Home Fun Day" a great success.

The Fun Day is set on the calender for 14 December 2013.

So please keep those in mind that are not as fortunate as us to have a Christmas with family.

Hotdog Day at John Wesley Community Centre

Friday we had the opportunity to do Hotdog Day again and off we set with Fran Caldwell to treat the little ones at the Care Centre.
The centre is geared toward assisting orphans and vulnerable children in the community and as such we have counselling and other social development programs available. - See more at: http://www.charitysa.co.za/john-wesley-community-centre.html#sthash.4OXUe7bq.dpuf

Pre School children from 1 to 6 years of age are under the care of qualified Care Givers and a senior teacher.
Some 170 youngsters receive classes and graded daily activities are planned to cater for the many needs of the children.

The children receive two healthy meals a day, which are planned to provide good basic nutrition and are varied from day to day.

They also receive basic computer instruction according to their age and abilities in our computer training centre.

We left them with something good to eat and drink before they went off for the day.

Everything at the centre is well cared for and clean. First impression is that it is a place of love and care.

Nan's Quilts No 14

Nan's Quilts No 14 is complete. It is Packaged. It is delivered.

This quilt is going to bring joy to Children in December.

It will be raffled and the proceeds will be used to have a fun day with the children of the John Wesley Community Centre in Etwatwa.

It is our idea to have a day of Water sports or Jumping Castle with candy floss and popcorn and treats for the children.

We need to do some serious fund raising here but it will be great fun doing it.

Nan's Quilts No 13

Another happy day for Nan's Quilts.

Today we delivered No 13 to a very special lady with a beautiful soul.

Fran is part of the Mission Team at Northfield Methodist Church in Benoni.

She does fantastic work in all different communities in and around Benoni.

Fran is always feeding, praying, making someone happy.

I am not sure yet why I am drawn to this ministry - I think maybe Fran has influenced me with her enthusiam for what she does.

Heads will be put together as to how funds will be raised with No 13 and we will keep you up to date.

Thanks Fran - shout if you need any help.

Reiger Park Hot Dog Day

Nan's Quilts took a bit of a detour today.

We decided just to have some fun with some of the kids that visited the farm on a leadership camp last year.

We set up some hotdogs and coolies for them and just chatted about what had happened during the year.

We wish you everything of the best for High School next year.

May you be richly Blessed

New Home for Nan's Quilts

Our lives have changed drastically since my last post, so here a bit of an update.

The land that we lived on was cought out by the government through a land claim so my working with the schools has come to an end.

Next Three To Be Finished Off
My love for children and quilting has not. After a very busy time selling off all the assets and live stock on the farm and closing down the business we are now all settled and actually have a bit of time to spend with the family and friends that we were so far away from.

Now I can also start thinking of how to take Nan's Quilts into a new direction.

In between the move and settling in I have another three quilts that are in the making and within the next two weeks I should have new homes for them.

Keep an eye on us here and see our progress. I have quite a few now ideas.

Nan's quilt No 8

How I love to do posts like this.

The Tom Newby leaders have raffled of Quilt no 8 and an astonishing R 5400 has been collected.

They split their money between two different charities as they saw the need.

Thank you Miss Klemp and her leaders for all their hard work.

We will soon have an update on exactly who benefited from their hard work and we are now pleased to announce the grand total collected thus far is R 18 000.

This is an amazing feat for the school children to achieve.

All I can say is THANK YOU

13 January 2013

Nan's Quilt No 7

Great news has come in from Summerfields Primary School to whom I donated Nan's Quilt No 7.

The quilt was raffled in the last term of 2012 and an amount of R 3800 was collected which was used for St Francis home in Boksburg.

Within the next few weeks we will be able to post the photos and more news on this event held at St Francis in December.

Well done Summies.

Super work

Nan's Quilts No 6

Nan's Quilt no 6 has now gone full circle.

Mrs. Duearte is a wonderful woman that works not only with her school but is also greatly involved in the community.

Mrs Duearte with the Nan's Quilt No 6 and the Raffle Winner
She has about 40 Grade 7 Leaders that have a feeding scheme which they all personally fund. Each Saturday morning they feed about 100 people in the Joe Slovo area just outside Johannesburg.

Mrs. Duearte assisted her pupils with Nan's Quilts No 6 to be used as fund raiser in the form of a raffle.

An amount of R 1800 was collected which will now be used for their feeding scheme.

I am not sure of the name of the winner of the quilt but I do hope you feel the love when you wrap yourself in it and I thank you for the work you put into raising the funds.

Thank you to you Mrs. Duearte you are an angel.

Nan's Quilts No 12

Sometimes we have to spoil the family too.

On 1st November 2012 we have a new grand-daughter that will make her appearance and No 12 was made just for her.
I hope you enjoy your quilt Logan.

There is love in every stitch of your quilt that will protect and comfort you as you use it.

Can't wait to meet you.

Nan's Quilts No 11

I don't know if you have ever experience the difficulty of purchasing a duvet inner for a King Size Extra Length bed.

I have never found one that hangs far enough over the sides of the bed, so this results in a tug of war at night to stay covered.

I thought I might try this out and make an extra big duvet inner and then I will have to make the duvet cover to fit.

I'll let you all know if it works out.

Nan's Quilts No 10

No:10

This is one of the quilts I started off with right in the beginning.

It was a real experimental quilt.

The fabrics were all different textures which made it very difficult to sew and to iron.

The shape kept on changing because of these textures but eventually the upper was ready and off it went to be quilted.

This was when another disaster struck it.

The quilting machine had a disastrous day when it did this quilt so emergency hand sewing had to be done.

Some how or other it has a lovely personality and I'm sure will find a good home.

I loved working on this quilt.

Nan's Quilts No 9

No 9

Nans quilt No 9 Is ready to go and will soon have a home at the Methodist Church in Geduld.

I have come in touch with a wonderful woman whom I will meet next Tuesday, and if she will accept this No 9 to help her fund any of her projects I will be most honoured.

Busy at Nan's Quilts

Quilt Pile Growing

Just because I haven't been posting does not mean I have not been busy.

The pile of Quilts for Nan's Quilts are growing and soon they will be distributed.

I just have to decide who the right people are that they must go to.
The Worktable

I do know the other quilts out there are doing their work and even though it may take a while I know they will raise good money and that the funds collected will benefit the right purpose

The think tank is really on the go.

My mind is so busy on which way to go.

Soon there will be great strides made.

Nan's Quilts No 5 - Update

"No 5"
Nan's Quilts No 5 was given to a young man by the name of Ernst van Tonder. Now this gentleman does incredible work at the Middelburg Care Centre in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
At one stage he was quite worried about how he was going to use this quilt to raise funds for the Care Centre, but at no stage was I perturbed. I know his heart is in the right place and he would make the right decisions.
I was not wrong. This amazing person has raised R 5000 now, and he is not finished yet, with this quilt. That is amazing.
Well done Ernst, this is what I am envisioning for this project and with people like you we can do this.
I get very excited when I hear this kind of news.
